Bengaluru officials from BBMP have stated that the sewage flow into the Koramangala stormwater drain has decreased significantly, from 120 million litres per day to around 8 MLD, thanks to the implementation of the K-100 Urban Waterway Project. However, local residents and businesses alongside the drain report that the foul smell and sewage-mixed water have not improved. The K-100 project, which aims to revamp the stormwater drain infrastructure with a budget of Rs 175 crore, covers a 9.2-km stretch from KR Market to Bellandur Lake and is expected to be finished by the end of 2024. To prevent sewage from entering the drain, a 5 MLD capacity sewage treatment plant has been established in Kumbaragundi near Kalasipalya. Additionally, efforts such as installing concrete rings and plants to naturally purify the water are underway. BWSSB is also constructing a sewage treatment plant near Shantinagar to further curb sewage entry into the drain. Retaining walls, bridges, decorative lighting, landscaping, and service roads have already been completed, and efforts continue to prevent rainwater from entering the drain. BBMP initiated the project in 2021 with the aim of improving the stormwater drain system. To complete it by 2023, but it missed several deadlines later.
